FLOWERS ON THE FARM
FLOWERS ON THE FARM
Grandma taught me how to grow flowers when I was just a young boy growing up down on the Gulf Coast in Pensacola, FL. So it was a no brainer when fellow farmers at our annual NC-ANA farm conference in February, 2019 suggested we add flowers to our you pick farm!
Fast forward and we are now getting ready for our 7th season and oh how we've grown! This year we are swinging for the fences and have planted early spring flowers last fall, including snapdragons.
We look forward to welcoming you to the farm to experience the little bit of magic we're creating right here on the outskirts of Charlotte, NC.

Betty's Dahlia Patch
We love growing dahlias here at McLawland Farms. 2025 will mark our fifth season growing them and we couldn't be happier. We have 12 crates currently stored in our root cellar that we dug up last November and December. Last fall we decided to try leaving about half our tubers in the ground protected by mulch and leaves. Fingers crossed they survived the extreme cold we had this winter!
We'll take the crated tubers out come March and begin the process of splitting them. One clump of tubers can easily yield 8+ splits into new plants. We like to get tubers in the ground around April 1st, but this year I'll likely have the crew help with planting by the 3rd week in March. We use pine straw to protect any early shoots from possible frost.
You may be wondering how our speciality patch got the name "Betty's Dahlia Patch". I really need to get a sign made! Well, our friend David's mom, Betty, convinced us that dahlias needed to be part of our flower farm. We had heard this before, and her adamant advice finally pushed us to give them a try. So glad we did! They are some of farmer Jason's favorite flowers that we grow. I think they're pretty special too! So Betty of Waynesville, NC, we thank you kindly for your tender nudge. You are welcome to visit anytime!
